Laser Dentistry in Colorado Springs: Less Pain, More Gain

Any dental procedure that involves the use of a laser is known as laser dentistry, a recent and still developing technology that has become more widely available to dentists for their patients. Typical laser dentistry in Colorado Springs uses a laser mechanism to treat gum tissue, tooth decay, and enamel with a highly concentrated beam of light. Other laser dentistry procedures commonly practiced include periodontal treatment (the treatment of gingivitis or gum disease), teeth whitening, and cavity treatment. When lasers are involved, this periodontal treatment is often referred to as laser periodontics.

With new technology comes new risks, but dental lasers have already been shown to be safe for both adults and children. In fact, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has studied and tested a wide variety of dental lasers and has approved multiple types of dentistry lasers used on both children and adults. The majority of lasers used for laser dentistry are identical or similar in design to many of the other medical lasers. These medical lasers have been used for procedures in neurosurgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, and by Ear/Nose/Throat (ENT) doctors with great success for many years.

Advantages of Laser Dentistry in Colorado Springs include:

A more sterile and bacteria-free environment (dentals lasers eradicate oral bacteria)

       Enhance effect of teeth whitening

       Faster healing

       Improved bonding process

In the treatment of herpes lesions and canker sores, the laser can actually decrease the pain experienced as a result of these sores

       Lower chance of infection

       Less pain

       Longer-lasting fillings

       Minimal bleeding

       Minimal or no anesthesia

       More controlled swelling

       No absorption of harmful chemicals

No noise (like a traditional dentist's drill has)

       Preservation of tooth structure

       Quick removal of tooth decay

       Reduced postoperative infection/discomfort

       Reduced time in dentist's office

Laser Dentistry Effects and Procedures:

Treatment of gum disease at an early stage is one of the most significant benefits of laser dentistry in Colorado Springs (or laser periodontics). Additionally, pregnant women and people with otherwise debilitating medical conditions can safely undergo laser procedures. There are some promises out there of “pain free laser dentistry,” but in reality there is no guarantee of a total pain-free experience. However, when compared to traditional dentistry, laser dentistry greatly reduces discomfort and frees patients from the reliance on Novocain and other anesthetics. Laser dentistry can even work well for treatment of bacterial infections and canker sores.

To protect the patient’s eyes during laser dentistry, it is common for them to wear protective glasses that shield their eyes from continuous exposure to the bright lights emitted by the lasers. The traditional sound of dental drills is replaced by a soft ticking sound, making for a quieter, more soothing experience. While laser dentistry has proven to be appropriate for many procedures and is covered by most insurance plans, it might not be suitable for all procedures. The vast majority of dental services can be performed with traditional treatments or lasers, but your dentist will have a unique insight that will help you determine whether laser dentistry in Colorado Springs is right for you.
